Winter may not be a good time for dogs to play and walk. So, here are five ways on how to keep your pet dogs active and safe during the cold weather.
1. Try indoor walking and dog treadmills.
Dog trainer Cesar Milan suggested to let your dogs spend on the treadmill. Just make sure that the speed is appropriate for your pet. Use a slow speed at first and then increase it as your dog learns this form of exercise.
2. Make mealtime more interesting.
Dogs get a bit lazy during winter and their eating habits may also be affected. That’s why instead of just feeding your pet dogs in an ordinary food bowl, feed them using a feed toy. This will encourage them to eat despite the cold weather.
3. Attend a dog class.
Attending a dog class will not only prevent your pet dogs from being bored but it will also provide him endurance and strength. Check out a dog club offering dog classes near your area.
4. Provide your dog a dry and draft-free doghouse.
If your dog is more comfortable in staying in a doghouse, make sure that it’s dry and draft-free. KSN.com suggests that the floor should be elevated a few inches off the ground. Also, cover it with cedar shavings or straw.
5. Stay at home.
And what better way to spend winter than staying at home with your loved ones. The Human Society of the United States said that the best prescription for winter’s woes is to keep your dog or cat inside with you and your family.
